Common Cropping Scenarios

What happens to your images when reformatting for different social networks:

16:9 → 1:1 Square (Instagram)

Converting a horizontal 1920×1080 video into a square 1080×1080 post requires trimming 840 pixels horizontally (420px from the left, 420px from the right). You retain 56.3% of the image.

16:9 → 9:16 (TikTok / Reels)

Cropping a horizontal 1920×1080 shot to vertical 9:16 retains only 31.6% of the original frame (607×1080 px). Important subjects must be centered, or letterboxing should be used instead.

3:2 DSLR → 4:5 (Instagram Portrait)

A standard 6000×4000 photo cropped to 4:5 produces 3200×4000 pixels, trimming 1400px from each side.
